Hi guys, how are you all doing today? I thought it was time to do round 2 of the unpopular opinions tag, but I’ve changed the questions a bit. This tag was created by the Book Archer over on Youtube. Click here for the original video. You can check part 1 of my answers here.
A popular book or series you didn’t like.
Well I have quite a few but in a bid not to repeat myself, I would say A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab. I had heard so many good things about her books and this book sounded intriguing, so I thought I would try it. Unfortunately it didn’t work for me. I just felt the entire book fell a little flat for me and I didn’t particularly care about the characters.
A popular series you have started but don’t know if you’ll finish.
The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor. I read the first book and really enjoyed it, but I really struggled to get into the second book. I ended up not finishing it, with the hope of picking it up at a later date. I don’t know what is was but I just couldn’t get into the second book. I think it may have been because it was quite slow. Anyway I don’t know if I’ll finish this trilogy but I think I’ll definitely have another go at Days of Blood and Starlight (book 2).
A series that deteriorated
This one definitely has to go to the Queen of the Tearling trilogy by Erika Johansen. I loved the first book, The Queen of the Tearling. The second book, The Invasion of the Tearling, was a completely different story. I thought it was so disappointing and it put me off the last book in the trilogy. In my opinion the second book was all over the place and the frequent use of flashbacks was annoying/frustrating. To me it felt like two novels combined into one, probably so the book would be longer. I felt that too many issues were forced into this book, instead of focusing in on one or two and some just seemed to be there as a shock factor. With the introduction of Lily, the other characters have to fight for page time. Basically I didn’t like it and I was disappointed. Safe to say I haven’t read the third and final book.
A popular book genre that you hardly reach for.
Well I don’t know about popular but I don’t read alot of romance, paranormal, horror or biographies. I just don’t find myself reaching for these kinds of books.
A popular or beloved character that you do not like.
This is a bit of a repetition but the first character that comes to mind is Lila Bard from A Darker Shade of Magic trilogy by V. E. Schwab, although I’m not sure if she’s beloved. There is something about her that I just didn’t like. I didn’t like her attitude toward other woman and to be honest I found her to be quite an annoying, arrogant character. I think it didn’t help that she is a superficial character and is very much the trope of a female character who has had a dark/painful past. I just wasn’t a fan.
A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.
Well I still hope to get into the writing of this author but so far I haven’t and that is Charles Dickens. I have read Great Expectations and Tale of Two Cities but I didn’t love either of them. I have Little Dorrit on my bookshelf waiting to be read so I hope I’ll be able to get into the flow of Dicken’s writing with it. I have seen an adaptation of it so I know I enjoy the story. It is quite an intimidating book though.
A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)
Last time I said love triangles and that will forever be my answer (I hate love triangles) but in a bid not to repeat myself another trope I’m tired of seeing is the Chosen one trope. Now sometimes I think this can be done well (see the Pellinor series) but I feel like it’s been done so many times now.
A popular series that you have no interest in reading.
A Court of Thorns and Rose series by Sarah J Maas. If you saw my first unpopular opinions tag you will know I am not a huge fan of the Throne of Glass series (also by Sarah J Maas) so I have no interest in reading her other series.
The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?
Maybe the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Don’t get me wrong I loved the books but they are very dense reads and the films are very good adaptations.
That’s it for round 2 of the unpopular opinions tag. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
