T5W: Favourite Fantasy or Science Fiction

Top 5 Wednesday was originally created and run by Lainey aka gingerreadslainey (Youtube channel) but it is now being run by Sam aka Thoughts on tomes (Youtube channel). Each week there is a different topic. You can check out the groups Goodreads page here for any more information and the future topics. This week the topic is favourite fantasy and science fiction books. This is the perfect topic for me as I enjoy reading both genres. I’m going to be taking about some newer favourites as I think I’ve mentioned my old favourites quite a bit, but just in case I’ll mention them quickly in some honourable mentions :).
  • The Tiger and the Wolf – fantastic fantasy book and it’s sequel is also amazing! I also highly recommend Children Of Time by the same author, which is a standalone sci-fi book
  • The Hunted Assassin by Paul B Kohler – fun, action packed and entertaining sci-fi standalone book.
  • Fudoki by Kij Johnson – this is a fantastic mix of fantasy and historical fiction, and it is a standalone. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was amazing.
  • Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi – standalone sci-fi, but I also highly recommend the Old Man’s War series by the same author.
  • Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher – fantastic first book in the Codex Alera series.
More favourites: Pellinor series, the Black Magician trilogy, the Old Kingdom trilogy, Inheritance cycle, the Red Rising trilogy, Dune, Tales of the Shikanoko series, Tawny Man trilogy, the Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, the Bone Season series and the Gentleman Bastards sequence.

I would love to know what your favourites are and if you have any recommendations based on mine. This year I hope to read even more fantasy and science fiction books, as well as finished some series I’m currently in the middle of. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.

  1. First Law series by Joe Abercrombie is amazing and well written. He’s able to switch between so many characters and give them all there own voice so nicely and the story is awesome too. Worth checking out I think. Then there’s Brent Weeks who created the Night Angel Trilogy which was also a great read for me. They are both in the Fantasy realm so maybe you could look into those. Have a great day!
