It is that time of the week for another Top Ten Tuesday. ItΒ is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010. This weeks topic is things in books that make you not want to read them. Some of these are things that may turn me off a book before I’ve even read it and some are things that will turn me off while reading a book.
-
Love triangles – just please stop.
-
When a blurb focuses alot on romance – romance heavy books just aren’t my thing.
-
Zombies – I’ve never seen the appeal of them. Also vampire, werewolves etc.
-
Horror – not a genre I enjoy.
-
People on the cover – I’m sorry but if there are people on a book cover I am probably going to pass it by completely.
-
When a book is compared to another book – I don’t think it does anyone any favours.
-
The mean girl – why do we have to pit women against each other for no reason other than that they are both women… I don’t get it and it puts me off a book every time.
-
Info dumps – yes I want to know about the world but I don’t want it dumped on me all at once.
-
Insta love – again just stop. It is not a thing.
-
Frequent and unclear changes in perspective – sometimes this can be changes between character perspective, sometimes switches in time but it makes things hard to follow.
There you have it – ten things that will make me not want to read a book. I have to admit that it took me quite some time to come up with all of these but I got there in the end :). Do you guys agree with me on any of these? Or do you think I’ve missed any? I hope you are having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.

Aw thank you so much! That means alot. Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond – for some reason your comment was hidden away in my spam folder. Again thank you so much for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

Totally agree with you on the love triangles, girl hate, and insta-love! I have all three on my list because they often detract from what would otherwise be a good story. Nice post Pippa!

I agree on the mean girl thing! Slut Shaming is on my list, because I hate how characters, and this is even in YA where the characters can be so accepting of so many differences, but any female rival is a “slut”,or one dimensional, aka the “mean” girl. That’s just lazy writing.

I totally agree and I just don’t understand why authors feel it’s necessary to pit woman against each other. I just don’t understand it π

Instalove is the worst! Nothing is quicker to ruin a good book than that.

Yes it is the worst! I really don’t understand why authors still do it.

Insta-love, mean girls and horror – all things I dislike in books! And I feel the same way about zombies, I mean I love watching The Walking Dead but I don’t think I’d ever pick up a book that features zombies!

Glad I’m not the only one. Oh OK I’ve never seen that programme… I guess I saw it was zombies and dismissed it π
