Hi guys, how are you all? Since I haven’t done a discussion post for a while, I thought it was about time to I did another one. I wanted to chat with you guys about physical books and e-books. Which one do you guys prefer? I have always preferred physical books, but over the years I’ve definitely come to see the use of e-books.
For me, I just love the feel of a physical book – I like reading from them. When I was younger e-readers weren’t a thing, so physical books were what we had, if that makes sense. I think it’s also important to support local book shops and that means buying physical books :). I’m pretty sure I will always prefer physical books – they are just nicer. Having said that there are some perks to e-books. I remember the days going on holiday before having a kindle and my bag would be heavy with books. I remember taking Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling and it took up most of my bag – I still finished all of my books and we had to find a English book shop to find some more. Basically the kindle or any e-reader is fantastic when you are going away as it means you can take plenty of reading material in a small tablet. It can also be quite good when you have a very heavy/long book as big books can be quite awkward to read. Another use I’ve found is the ability to get books through Negalley on my kindle. As a book blogger, I basically read alot and to make sure I’ve got new content it’s important to me to read new books and releases. Netgalley allows me to do that, without completely breaking my bank account. So my kindle is really useful in that way. There are definitely pros and cons for both.

Yeah nothing can really beat physical copies. But there are two things that e-books beat physical books by a mile. First of, sitting on your phone reading, some parent comes along and go “sitting on your phone again are we?”, and then you stone-faced show them the text and say “Yes, I’m reading ‘The Book Thief’, awfully good book”. Watch the baby-boomer freak out as their mind being unable to process the information that young people can both read and be on their phone.
And the other thing, is being able to easily eat while reading, like a snack or something.

Haha that must be so satisfying 🙂 Yeah it is definitely easier to eat while reading on a e-reader and then you don’t have to worry about get food on your book 🙂

I prefer physical books–they smell good and they’re easy on my eyes too. I don’t have a Kindle but I use the Kindle app on my iPad. I already have poor eyesight and I really don’t want my prescription glasses to get thicker lenses, haha.
E-books are amazing when it comes to portability and weight. They obviously have a number of pros but they’re definitely not for me.😊

Yeah I mostly feel the same way. I do much prefer reading from my kindle than my ipad though! Physical books are definitely the best 🙂

I’m definitely a physical book fan, there’s nothing like opening a brand new book, but I also have a kindle which is great for holidays

I like a mix of them as although I adore physical books, I love the convenience of ebooks and it’s also a lot easier to get smaller indie books on the Kindle along with all the daily deals on Amazon. If the physical book and the ebook cost the same, I’ll still pick the physical one although this does mean that I’m dreading moving because of how many books I have!
I also enjoy the fact that my Kindle has a reading light so I can read in the dark.

Oh yeah that’s handy that your kindle has a reading light. Mine is one of the older ones so it doesn’t have it. Yeah e-books are definitely quite convenient at times, but I think I will always prefer physical books. I am with you on the moving front – I have so many books 🙂

I only buy books in hardcover now [or paperback if that is all that is offered] if I really like the book and know I’ll re-read it again.
I carry my whole years worth of books on my kindle, so I’m never stuck. I don’t have to worry about finishing one book and being stuck without until I can stock up again at home. As I’m getting older, I also appreciate that I can change the font size and make it larger. 2 presses of a buttons and bam, I can clearly see the text. I also don’t have to worry about moving my ebook collection. I live on a third floor condo and when I moved here 10 years ago, I vowed I’d never move again with so many books [I’ve got 7 or 8 bookcases of books, 9/10th’s hardcover]. That collection has NOT gotten smaller 🙂
I do like being able to write in the margins of paper copies. I’m currently reading Don Quixote and there is no way I could underline and make notes so easily on my kindle as I do with the paper copy.

Thank you! Yeah there are definitely pros and cons to both. I find having a kindle so useful, especially when travelling. Wow that’s a lot of bookcases 🙂 I’m not quite at that stage yet but I’m sure I’ll get there at some point 🙂

I’m 50/50. I just bought a Nook last year. I love the feel of physical books, but I also love the convenience of my Nook, and always having library access at my fingertips.

I love the convenience of ereaders. I got my first Kindle on Father’s Day 2011. I remember reading A Game of Thrones in bed one night and finishing it I loved the fact that I was able to purchase the second novel in my pajamas. I take my kindle to work everyday and whenever there is some down time I can always read.
