Hi guys, I hope you are all well. It is time for the first wrap up of the year. I had a pretty good reading month, although there was one book that unfortunately didn’t work for me. I read 6 books in total (5 novels, 1 graphic novel) and started a seventh. I’m currently on track with my Goodreads reading challenge, which is a nice way to end the first month of the year :). Anyway, let’s get started.
Black Leopard, Red Wolf / book 1 of the Dark Star trilogy / Marlon James / ★★
Thank you to the publisher for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I will have a full review of this up closer to the release date, so I’m going to keep this short. Unfortunately this one didn’t work for me. This was a good book and unlike any other fantasy book I’ve read but I wasn’t a fan of the writing style. I found it a struggle to get through this book due to how it was written. However that is just my own personal taste and I think a lot of people will enjoy this book, especially if you like darker fantasy.
Monstress Vol 2: The Blood / Marjorie M. Liu / ★★★
It had been a while since I read the first volume so it took me a while to get back into the story. I probably should have reread the first one before reading it. I love the art style of these graphic novels and the story is great, but I just wasn’t fully invested in it.
Bloody Rose / Nicholas Eames / ★★★
While I enjoyed this book overall, I personally enjoyed Eames’s other book more. The writing is once again great and it was good to be back in this world. However the first half really dragged for me and I wasn’t invested in the characters.
Fire from Heaven / Mary Renault / ★★★.5
This is the first book in a trilogy about the imagined life of Alexander the Great. This one was quite a slow read for me but I still enjoyed it. I know very a little about this historical figure so I found this to be quite an interesting read, although it did take me a little while to settle into the flow of the writing.
A Memory Called Empire / Arkady Martine /★★★.5
This is the first book in a new sci-fi series set to be released on 4th April 2019. I will have a full review up closer to the release date. This is an impressive debut with a compelling story and an interesting world. It did take me a while to become full invested in the main character but I still really enjoyed reading this book. Overall a great book and I am interested in checking out it’s sequel.
The Priory of the Orange Tree / Samantha Shannon / ★★★★.5
I have a full review coming soon, so I will keep this short. I really enjoyed this book. The world building was so well, the plot is compelling throughout and the writing is great. If you have enjoyed Shannon’s other books (the Bone Season series) then I think you will really enjoy this too. I highly recommend checking this out.
That’s it for today. I’m hoping for another good month of reading in February. I’m not going to set myself a TBR but I will quickly mention some possible books I want to get to next. Firstly, I’m currently reading Twenty Years After by Alexandre Dumas, which is the sequel to the Three Musketeers. Other books high up on my TBR are Becoming by Michelle Obama, A Time of Blood by John Gwynne and White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht. What was your favourite book you read in January? I’d also love to know if you’ve read any of the books I’ve mentioned. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
