May Wrap Up

Hi guys, I hope you are all well. It’s the end of another month which means it’s time for me to write/post a new wrap up. I had a good reading month overall, although it was a little slow at times.

Free Food for Millionaires / Min Jin Lee / ★★★

This is the author’s debut novel and I’ve been meaning to read it since enjoying Pachinko, also by Min Jin Lee. While this is a good book overall, I just wasn’t completely invested in the characters. Some of the commentary of society and the look into Asian-American families were quite interesting but there were also elements of the story that dragged a little for me. If you enjoyed Pachinko, I think you will also like this one.

Grey Sister / Mark Lawrence / ★★★.5

This is the second book in the Book of the Ancestor trilogy. I was in a bit of a slump while reading this so that may have affected my rating, but I still enjoyed this instalment. I have a full review of this coming soon, so keep an eye out for that.

White Chrysanthemum / Mary Lynn Bracht /★★★★

This is a dual perspective historical fiction book that uses two timelines to tell the story of “comfort women” during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The first timeline is set in 1943 and follows a young girl called Hana, who is taken from her home by Japanese soldiers after hiding her younger sister from them. The second is set in 2011 and follows the sister, Emi. This was not an easy read due to the subject matter but it is important to know about these parts of history. This book is well worth a read.

Queenslayer / Sebastien de Castell / ★★★★

This is the fifth book in the Spellslinger series. Once again, Castell has written a great continuation of this series. I find these books so easy and enjoyable to read. I cannot wait to see how things conclude in the sixth and final book in the series. I will be posting a full review soon so keep an eye out for that.

Age of Legend / Michael J. Sullivan / ★★★★

This is the fourth book in the Legend of the First Empire series. I will be posting a full review of this one so I’ll keep it short. I thought it was a fantastic instalment to this series. The character development continues to be well done and I enjoyed the direction of the plot. If you haven’t started this series yet I would definitely recommend checking it out. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

That’s it for today. I’m not setting myself a TBR post this month although I may post a holiday TBR as I’m going away for two weeks in June. Did you guys have a good month? I’d also love you know your thoughts if you’ve read any of the books mentioned. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.

  1. I’ll definitely try Free Food for Millionaires if I end up enjoying Pachinko. I’m hoping to read Pachinko this year for the Year of the Asian Reading Challenge!

I look forward to trying The Book of the Ancestor series and De Castell’s books (which sound super fun!).

Can’t wait to see your holiday TBR!
