This is the first book in the Theonite series. It is set in the same universe as the author’s other book, The Sword of Kaigen, which you may have seen me rave about. Since I read SoK earlier this year, I’ve been meaning to check out this series and I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed this one too.
Theonite: Planet Adyn is mostly set on Earth, but it is also partially set on Duna, a planet in a parallel dimension and is very similar to Earth. On Duna, many people have elemental powers and these people are called Theonites. On Earth, however, people do not have these powers, except the book’s protagonist, Joan Messi. I love this world and the magic system. Wang does a great job at developing it throughout the book and I cannot wait to explore more of the world in the next book. The only thing I will say that a lot of time is spent on the world building, which may lead to dragging for some. I personally didn’t have this issue but it may be something to know. If you have read The Sword of Kaigen then you will already know about elements of the world, but it is great to be able to find out more about it in this book.
While it does have a bit of a slow start, I found it so easy to settle into the flow of the story. At just under 300 pages, this was quite a quick read for me. As this is the first book in this series, there is a fair amount of set up for future books, but I didn’t find it overwhelming and it probably just made me more excited to see what comes next.
In this book, we have two main protagonist, Joan and Daniel, although the story itself is seen through the eyes of Joan. Both of these characters are so well written and I loved how their relationship was developed. The only thing I would say is that they seemed older than their ages to me. Both are thirteen years old but to me they felt at least a couple of years older. It didn’t really bother me while reading, but I just kept forgetting their ages.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the next instalment in the series, Theonite: Orbit. I would highly recommend checking this out, especially if you’ve already read and loved The Sword of Kaigen. Have you guys read this book? I’d love to know what you thought. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
