Hi guys, I hope you are all well. You guys know the drill, it’s the end of the month which means it’s time to talk about the books I’ve read in September. I only read 3 books this month, which I think is the lowest number of books read in a month this year. I was a little distracted by Fire Emblem: Three Houses on my Switch, so I didn’t read as much. Anyway onto the mini reviews.
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City / K. J. Parker / ★★★
This one follows an engineer, Orhan, as he chronicles the events of the Great Siege. I quite enjoyed this one, although it did take me a little while to get into it. It was a fun read but I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to. I just couldn’t get full invested in the characters or the story. I’d still recommend checking it out, if the premise sounds interesting to you.
The Black Hawks / David Wragg / ★★★★
This is the first book in the Articles of the Faith duology. I really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend checking it out. There is a fantastic cast of characters, good writing and although it started out a little slow for me, the plot is mostly engaging. I have a full review of this one coming towards the end of October, so keep an eye out for that. I also love the cover of this one.
The Girl with Ghost Eyes / M. H. Boroson / ★★★★
This is the first book in the Daoshi Chronicles. It is set towards the end of the nineteenth century in San Francisco’s China town and follows Li-lin, a twenty three year old widow who has yin eyes, which gives her the ability to see the spirit world. I picked this one up on a bit of a whim and I’m really glad I did. I very much enjoyed reading this one. I thought Li-lin was a great protagonist and the plot was compelling throughout. I have a full review of this coming soon, so keep an eye out for that.
That’s it for today. Hopefully I’ll get into reading more in October, since I wasn’t in a big reading mood in September. What was your favourite book from this month? I’d also love to know if you’ve read any of the books I mentioned today. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
