The Spellslinger series is a six book fantasy series that follows a young man called Kellen and his business partner, a squirrel cat called Reichis. In the first book, we meet a sixteen year old Kellen who is about to take his first mage trial that will make him a spellcaster, but his magic is gone. Kellen tries to use his cunning to avoid disgrace. To avoid any spoilers, I won’t be going into any further details about the plot.

The main strength of this series, in my opinion, is the characters. Kellen and Reichis are fantastic protagonists and their development throughout the six books is so well done. I always enjoy coming back to these two protagonists and I would love to see more of them in the future, maybe when their a bit older. The secondary characters are also well written. It was easy to keep track of each of the characters and Castell does a great job at developing their relationships. From the beginning, you will became attached to these characters and want to know what happens to them next.

The plot is compelling throughout the six books and will keep you guessing as to what will happen next. Each book is as good as the last, if not better, and I enjoyed every second of reading this series. The world building is initially a bit lacking but throughout the six books we get to explore it more. The magic system is unique and interesting, if a little tricky to explain in short.

Overall this is a fantastic series and I would highly recommend checking it out, if you haven’t started it already. Castell is currently working on two new books set in the Spellslinger world, which I will definitely be keeping an eye out for. Have you guys started this series? I’d love to know what you thought. I hope you are all having wonderful day and I will see you next time.
