Powder Mage novellas / Brian McClellan

Hi guys, I hope you are all well. I’ve recently read a Powder Mage novellas, so today I thought I’d share some thoughts on them. I am a huge fan of the Powder Mage and Gods of Blood and Powder trilogies, both by Brian McClellan, but I’d never really read any of the novellas, so I thought I’d check some out. I’m really glad I did, because I really enjoyed the four that I have read so far. Let’s get started.

Forsworn / Brian McClellan / ★★★★

This novella takes place approximately 35 years before the events of Promise of Blood, book 1 of the Powder Mage trilogy.

In this first novella, we get to meet Taniel’s mother, Erika ja Leora. I loved finding out about this character because we only learn a little about her in the trilogy itself. It was an entertaining and engaging read throughout. If you already love the series or you’re just looking for a great fantasy short story to read, this is well worth checking out.

Servant of the Crown / Brian McClellan / ★★★★

This novella takes place approximately 35 years before the events of Promise of Blood, book 1 of the Powder Mage trilogy.

Captain Tamas is the main protagonist in this novella, alongside Erika. We get to see how they meet and how their relationship starts. As you guys know I love the Powder Mage trilogy, so I loved finding out more about the history of these characters. I would definitely say that this one has more of a focus on characterization, but there are still plenty of twists and turns too.

Murder at the Kinnen Hotel / Brian McClellan / ★★★★

This novella takes place approximately 22 years before the events of Promise of Blood, book 1 of the Powder Mage trilogy.

A young Adamat is the main protagonist of this novella. To be honest it took me a while to warm up to Adamat in the trilogy so I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this one, but I really enjoyed it. The mystery and politics make it an engaging read and McClellan does a fantastic job at continuing to build on the world. I also really enjoyed seeing Adamat in his younger years.

Ghosts of the Tristan Basin / Brian McClellan / ★★★★

This novella takes place approximately eight months before the events of Promise of Blood, book 1 of the Powder Mage trilogy.

This was probably one of my favourites, purely because we get to see two of my favourite characters, Taniel and Ka-poel. It was great to see their relationship in an earlier stage and I hope their are more novellas that will explore their relationship. The story was engaging throughout and it was great to see Ben Styke in this novella too. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I cannot wait to read more novellas set in this world.

That’s it for today. I don’t tend to read a lot of novellas but I want to change that this year as I think they are a great way to add more depth to characters and the world of fantasy books. Do you read many novellas/short stories? Let’s chat in the comments. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
