The Angel of the Crows is a fan-fiction of Sherlock Holmes and is set in an alternate London in the 1880’s. It retells some of Holmes famous cases but with a supernatural twist to each story. Dr. Doyle has returned to London after being injured while serving in a war in Afghanistan. He ends up finding a peculiar roommate called Crow, who is an angel.
While I enjoyed this book overall, I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to. It felt like it was more of a collection of Holmes’s adventure, rather than a standalone story which is what I was expecting, if that makes sense. I did enjoy reading these stories with a supernatural twist but I kind of wanted a whole story, whether it was new or a retelling. There is an overarching story line throughout surrounding Jack the Ripper, but I think I would have preferred it if that was the only plot line. I didn’t have a whole lot of investment in the retellings and I have to admit that a few times I just wasn’t that eager in picking it up again.
The characterizations were good and the two main characters, Crow and Doyle, were both well written. I enjoyed finding out more about them as the plot progressed. The writing is good and I really liked the setting of an alternate London, although it would have been good to have a little more depth of the supernatural elements of the world.
Overall I enjoyed this book, but didn’t look it as much I wanted. If you are a fan of this author and/or Sherlock Holmes, I’d still recommend checking this book out. Have you guys read this? I’d love to know what you thought. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
