This is the first book in the Books of Babel series. Originally self published in 2013, it was picked up by Orbit and re-released in 2018. It follows Thomas Senlin, a sensible teacher who has to search for his wife after she goes missing on their honeymoon to the huge Tower of Babel. It sounds pretty straightforward but don’t let that fool you – this book contains a story full of twists and oddities.
Senlin Ascends contains a story that is compelling throughout and the pacing is so well done. There are a lot of layers to the story but Bancroft has managed to weave them all together without disrupting the flow of the plot. The writing is great and I found it so easy to settle into the story. Thomas Senlin is such an interesting protagonist, particularly in a fantasy book because he’s so different to what most readers come across when reading fantasy books. The cast of characters around him are also so well written and I can’t wait to see what is in store for Senlin in the sequel.
One of my favourite things about this book is the world. The Tower of Babel is such an intriguing idea and Bancroft has done a fantastic job at creating this unique world. Very simply put, the Tower of Babel is a gigantic tower and each floor or ringdom (as it’s referred to in the book) is a distinct place, each with their own attractions, rules and quirks. The Tower is a unique concept and I can’t wait to explore more of it in the next three books in the series.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely be continuing with this series. I’ve already got my hands on a copy of the second book. If you haven’t read this book yet, I highly recommend checking it out. Have you guys read it? I’d love to know what you thought. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
