The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water is a Malaysian based fantasy novella with a wuxia (genre of Chinese fiction concerning martial arts) feel to it. It follows a group of bandits who are suddenly joined by a young nun. This is my first read of 2021. The fantastic artwork is done by Sija Hong and the lettering by Sarah J. Coleman.

I have previously read another novella by Cho, The Terracotta Bride, and really enjoyed it, so I’ve been meaning to check out more of her works. I have to admit that what first drew me to this book was the amazing cover art, but the synopsis of it convinced me I needed to check it out. The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water is a character driven fantasy with found family, banter and great characters. From the very beginning, I was drawn into this world and I found it so easy to settle into the flow of the writing. The plot was compelling throughout, although I do think the ending happens a little abruptly. As a novella it is restricted by its length but I still thought it wrapped up well and I really enjoyed reading it. I would also say that although it does have a wuxia feel to it, don’t go in expecting an action packed read. There is action, but it is mainly a character driven story so it does have a slower pace at times. It features a fantastic, distinctive cast of characters, all of whom are so well written. It did take me a couple of chapters to get used to a few characters names due to me not being used to the manner of address – for example one of the main character, Tet Sang, is referred to as Ah Sang. After a little research, I now understand that this is a form of address used for family or close friends.

Overall this is a fantastic novella and I would definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you’re looking for a new novella to check out. It was a great book to start of the new year of reading for me. Have you guys read this book? I’d love to know what you thought – let’s chat in the comments. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
