Titles / The Bear and Nightingale, The Girl in the Tower and The Winter of the Witch
Author / Katherine Arden
Series / Winternight trilogy
Overall Rating / ★★★★
I know I’ve already done a full review for all three books in this trilogy, but I enjoyed these books so much I thought I’d do a 5 reasons to start this series style review, so here we go.
-
It is set in medieval Russia and is inspired by Russian folklore. The setting of this trilogy is one of my favourite things about it and the author does a great job at expanding it in each of the books.
-
If you enjoy fantasy books with a fairy tale feel to them, then you should definitely check these books out.
-
Each book is an atmospheric read with a compelling plot and great writing. The pacing is slow at times but I never felt it dragged.
-
Vasya is a great protagonist and all of the characters are well written. Their progression through the three books are so well done too.
-
Each book is as good, if not better, then the last and the concluding instalment ends the trilogy so well. I enjoyed every second of reading each of these books and once I started I didn’t want to put them down.
I finally read The Bear and the Nightingale earlier this year and really enjoyed it, and I imagined to grab The Girl in the Tower from the library before it closed. This is definitely a series I want to finish this year. 😁 Great post!

I have the trilogy, so I will give it a go at some point! I’ve seen a few mixed reviews, so I’ll be interested to see what I make of it. The setting sounds really lovely though!
